What
do Henry Purcell, George Gershwin
and Cole Porter all have in common?
They were all composers of the theater--of a popular theater! They were song writers who could take verse and, with a genius of alchemy, turn word into melody. Purcell, like Berlin and Porter, molded songs that set words to music in the most natural way while powerfully expressing the sentiment and mood of the text. This program presents show music from the 17th to 20th century, from King Arthur to Porgy and Bess, from The Old Bachelor to the Gay Divorcee.
