The music of the 18th century Silesian composer Johann Schobert is little known today, yet it helped establish the classical chamber music idiom, and was an influence on Mozart and the Mannheim School. The Op.16 set of 4 Sonatas are perfect examples of his strongly keyboard-led style. The music positively bounces along with joyous zest and an abundance of melody. Each work opens with a sweet, delicately songful Andante. Now these revelatory pieces are splendidly championed by a notable American trio, The Four Nations Ensemble, featuring the harpsichord of Andrew Appel. They make the happiest of recording debuts for Gaudeamus. The Four Nations Ensemble's follow-up disc of Schobert Sonatas Opp. 5 & 6 is also available.
